“Dirty Dishes”

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Every so often, I like to take a different route back to the office after lunch to see if there’s anything new in the area to pique my interest. Today, of all windy-ass days to do so, I decided to walk up 19th Street to Broadway. As I rounded the corner, I was immeditely sucked in by the window display at Fishs Eddy.

This tabletop store showcases “American sturdyware” consisting of strong white diner plates, vintage mix-and-match tabletop items, and more recently, commerical-grade designer dish- and glassware.

The particular dishware that caught my eye was designer Cynthia Rowley’s latest creation: a collection of white china plates, bowls, cups, and saucers with retro-style watercolor borders of topless ladies, adaptly named “Dirty Dishes,” though the feel is more flirty rather than porn–but definitely cute.

I’m not big on buying entire dishware services, especially ones like this that will run me $75 a setting, but I think my friend Shan would dig it. Maybe I’ll grab a cup and saucer for her to use the next time she comes over for coffee.
