Metal Niece has been with me for the past few days. Yesterday, my brother babysat her while I went to visit my grandpa at the hospital. I told him to throw on a DVD for her to keep her busy. What movie does he put on?

The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Umm…don’t you think you should have asked me before putting on Rocky Horror for my 12-year-old niece?

Why? It’s a good movie. She liked it.

Obviously, my brother isn’t used to children, though I found that neither am I. You have to remember to do stuff, like feed them breakfast. And you can’t just say to them, “OK, time to get ready, we’re leaving in 20 minutes.” They don’t understand what that means. I had to guide this kid through every step of the getting-ready routine.

Go wash your face. Did you brush her teeth? Ok, time to get dressed… Socks, too…Shoes would help. Umm…your jacket? Don’t leave your bowl of oatmeal on the table. Food doesn’t go into the sink! Why are you stepping on your headphones? Why is your book on the floor? Ok, walk toward the door. Ok, step outside. OUT! OUTSIDE!!! Walk. Go ahead, walk, no NOT into me, forward! WALK FORWARD! What’s the matter with you?!?!

Now here we are at my office. I brought my new laptop so she could watch DVDs while I work. Right now, she’s got the headphones in while watching There’s Something About Mary, so all’s calm.

But in a few minutes, I have to leave her to her own devices while I attend an hour-long meeting. I’m hoping she’ll be so engrossed in the movie, that she won’t get up from her chair and accidentally knock over my computer, my work papers, my office supplies, stepping on all of it, crushing everything in sight. Anything not destroyed will be soiled with food, ink, whatever’s available.

Yes, my sweet angel girl is Godzilla. She doesn’t mean to be, she just is.
