BSG Weight-Loss Plan

Sunday, November 12th, 2006 at 12:51 am

It’s been a quiet weekend so far. Dave has computer-related issues to deal with and I have some freelance assignments to finish, so we’re staying in. We have my mother-in-law here for the weekend. She’s taking a medication right now which makes her a bit off balance and lightheaded, so we’d rather she not be home alone.

The three of us have been huddled in the living room together watching television while performing our respective tasks. Luckily, MIL is pretty easy-going and willing to eat anything we make or order; she’s also cool about watching whatever we put on.

So, we’ve had some tofu and broccoli chinese food, veggie pizza with no cheese, protein shakes, and scones while catching up on episodes of 30 Rock, Til Death, Happy Hour, New Adventures of Old Christine, Doctor Who, and most importantly, Battlestar Galactica.

—BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SEASON 3 SPOILER AHEAD—

Lovie called earlier and thought it was horrifying that I’d “subject” my mother-in-law to SciFi programming. I have to say, the MIL is a hip lady. She was digging everything and definitely followed Galactica closely. MIL and I got to talking about the whole Lee Adama weight-gain storyline.

I’ve read a lot of comments online about this particuliar storyline. Some fans think it was unnecessary. I can see how it would happen to him. It might not be so much that he was just pigging out all the time (which seems to be the general concensus), but more like he stopped working out or even really doing anything at all because he was depressed.

Here’s the part that I don’t believe. He goes a year being fat and lazy, then one day his father goes off on him and that’s enough to wake his ass up and get him back to the gym. Next thing you know, he’s in a towel stepping on a scale and his six-pack-ab physique is back. Um… no. The guy had a HUGE gut and a puffy face, and now he’s all cut up again. And let’s not forget, they made it a point to show him mindlessly snacking away during a conversation to get the point across that he doesn’t care how fat he’s gotten. Yes, I know, it’s in the script so that’s how it “happens,” but in real life, it would have taken him a long-ass frakkin’ time to get back into top shape.

After lengthy analysis, the MIL and I agreed that with great results like that, we want on the Galactica weight-loss plan!

Anyhow, Dave was just browsing through the cable listings guide on the TV listings and came across the The Empire Strikes Back on Cinemax, but when he selected the station, the notice came up that we did not actually have Cinemax. Can someone please explain to me WHY I totally bugged out, like “WHY, OH, WHY DON’T WE HAVE CINEMAX! CALL AND ORDER IT!”, when I own seven variations of the The Empire Strikes Back?

I haven’t watched the past few episodes of BSG off my TiVo yet. The weight gain wasn’t a problem for me, but I think that they went a bit over the top with it. Oddly enough, I am not as into the series as I was the past two seasons and don’t know why… because I think they’re doing a pretty good job keeping things fresh.

Oh no! Lee Adama gets fat!? Dang, I’m only in season 2.0 (not even into 2.5 yet), and he’s still hot. You’ve got to let us know if there are spoilers, Eve! Do you think it’s really a spoiler? At any rate, I don’t think I’ll tell my husband- that way I can see it through his eyes.

Oops, sorry, about the spoiler. I added a warning. I didn’t think of it because it didn’t advance the storyline of the show and it was dropped so quickly because the producers didn’t see the point in it.

[…] Bonus: Speaking of BSG, I’m with Eve. I’ve been going to the gym twice a week since last March, but I’m sure not dropping the pounds like Apollo. What is his secret? Maybe I need the old man to chide me. […]
