Skull & Bones Birthday

***Many of you know that I’ve been working on Metal Niece’s birthday cake now for a long time, but that I couldn’t post about it, because the birthday girl is online and knows where I write. So, for those of you wondering how the cake turned out for yesterday’s party, here’s the story, complete with photo of the finished cake.

Months ago when Metal Niece found out that the nationwide release of Corpse Bride fell on her birthday weekend, we promised we would take her and a bunch of her friends to see the movie as part of her birthday party.

At the same time, I planned to make her birthday cake (as I do every year). I always try to make something different than the previous year and style it to whatever interests Metal Niece has at the time. This year, since her party was revolving around Corpse Bride (and she’s been “window shopping” for its merchandise for weeks), I decided to make something having to do with the movie.

I’ve been planning and researching for this cake for weeks now, but couldn’t come up with something definite till I saw the movie last weekend (at the sneak preview sans birthday party kids). In the film there’s a 3-tier white wedding cake with skulls and bones. That was it. The next day, I ran out and bought most of the ingredients and supplies I’d need to make the birthday cake, knowing full well that some way, some how, skulls and bones would be on it!!!

The end result was a devil’s food chocolate cake with banana buttercream, covered in rolled fondant, with fondant decorations inspired by the movie in general and especially the aforementioned wedding cake. I brought it to the party yesterday and it was a big hit.

At the very top right of this entry is School Storm, the BeGoths doll we gave Metal Niece. (It was the BeGoth doll that looked most like her.) We also gave her a tiny guitar figurine with skull design (to match her actual guitar — yes, the kid likes skulls!); a few Roald Dahl books; the Corpse Bride soundtrack; and one personally signed edition of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline (her favorite book—see photo at right).
