Ides of March

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006 at 2:57 pm

Ok, enough already with the fucking corned beef, ok? If your religious belief is that you think you’ll go to Hell if you eat meat on a Friday during Lent, then guess what? Don’t eat the fucking meat! Instead of trying to get a dispensation from the Catholic Church so that you can eat meat this Friday, but forego it the next day, how about this one: WAIT TIL SATURDAY TO EAT THE CORNED BEEF!!!!!!!!!!! How friggin’ hard is that?

~~

Beware the Ides of March

What would happen if one year the Ides of March fell on something like Trust Each Other Day or during Friendship Week? Who exactly grants the dispensation so that you can continue to distrust others? I wonder.

Good thing that’s not the case this year. Woo, crisis averted! In observance of this most special day, remember to keep your paranoia levels at Red Alert and your back-watching readiness at Defcon 1. And, of course, crank Iron Maiden’s “Ides of March.”

~~

In case anyone besides my mom cares what I’m eating, check out what I wrote HERE about an awesome restaurant called Quantum Leap that Dave and I went to last week.

I’m on the lookout for a new handbag. My all-time favorite was/is this one from Dooney & Bourke. It’s from their signature mini-tassle collection described HERE.

My D&B bag was perfect for me in every way, but the trim is leather and while I won’t dispose of it while it’s still usable (that would be wasteful), I will not buy new products of this kind. It sucks, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s just a friggin’ bag that holds my shit, shit that if I didn’t have to tote around I certainly wouldn’t.

nappa_bagSo, yeah, I need a new bag that’s free of animal-derived products. I searched online at Vegetarian Shoes and Bags and found the bag to the right (click for a larger view). Here’s the description:

Faux Nappa Bag

Great, versatile, practical handbag. The best faux nappa leather we could find. Two faux leather handles are attached by stylish belt buckles. 23′’ length allows carrying over shoulder. Belt buckle flap with zipper closure on top. Inside side zippered pocket, side pouches for your cell phone and pocket PC. Black fabric lining, silver hardware. 13 ½” l x 6” h

So all you fashionistas out there, what do you think? Is this a good replacement for my current bag?

I like the bag! I also like that you call it a bag, and not a purse, like my Washingtonified ass. Of course, there’s always “pockabook.” ;-)

Actually, as you can imagine, I used to always say “pockabook.”

Then when I moved on up to an office job in the City, I realized it was actually a handbag, la ti da!

Purse is what my Great-Grandma called it. I could never jump on to that one.

I’m actually looking forward to avoiding the whole corned beef thing entirely… which is only happening because Mrs. Geek’s seriously Irish family has not yet invited us to where it will be served. *sarcasm on* Oh yeah, boiled beef. Yum. *sarcasm off* I don’t need to be a vegan to think twice about going there. Then again… we keep thinking that we’re not being invited because someone is mad at us. Oh well, every dark cloud has a silver lining and all. Gotta love family

Hmmm…you know, Zappos.com has a whole section of vegetarian shoes–they might have bags also:

The things that come to mind right off the bat are Prada nylon bags (which sometimes have leather fixtures, but not always) www.modaparty.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=302

What about le sportsac? They have some super cute shoulder bags and they come in patterns, solids, and funky fabrics. www.lesportsac.com.

I’ll keep brainstorming for you, but these should give you some ideas.

My mother has this odd complex about adding a rutabega (spelling…whatever, too tired to look it up) to her corned beef and cabbage… claims it’s a swedish thing, but isn’t CB+C strictly irish? Ah, whatev. :
